serving Buffalo, Amherst, Lancaster and Orchard Park, New York
At Forestream Dental Group, conveniently located in the Buffalo, New York area, we know that no one likes to have bad breath or be around others with offensive breath. But sometimes it seems you just can't figure out why you have it or how get rid of it. There can be many causes for bad breath, from benign to serious . Listed below are some causes (and solutions) for bad breath.
Bacteria - the most common cause of bad breath, especially on the gums and tongue. It's important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Brushing your tongue or using a tongue scraper can help get rid of the bacteria that live in the grooves of your tongue.
Gum disease - gingivitis and periodontitis. There are treatments, like laser gum treatment, to help get rid gum disease. However, if left untreated for too long, gum disease can cause tooth loss, bone deterioration, and a great deal of pain.
Dry mouth - for those with dry mouth, it's especially important to drink a lot of water to stay hydrated. Chewing sugarless gum or mints can help produce more saliva too. If those things don't help, talk to Dr. Evola about special mouth rinses for dry mouth.
Cavities - left untreated, the decay from cavities can give off an odor. It's really important for your overall dental health to have regular check-ups to detect cavities before they cause real problems.
Certain foods - like cabbage, garlic and onions, for example, can cause really offensive breath. Some foods affect some people worse than others. Take notice of the foods that really affect your breath and then avoid them when possible. If you can't avoid them, brush your teeth right after the meal. Chewing parsley or mint can help if your toothbrush isn't handy.
Smoking - While it's easier said than done, the best solution for smoker's breath is to stop smoking. It's better for your overall health as well. In the meantime, brush often, chew sugarless gum and try a mouthwash specifically designed for smokers.
Certain medical conditions - like diabetes, kidney failure, and bowel obstructions can cause offensive mouth odors. If you have bad breath that you can't seem to control, talk to your doctor or dentist right away. The type of odor, from sweet to sour smelling, can give your doctor or dentist clues about a serious medical condition you may have.
If fresh breath seems to elude you no matter what you do, talk to cosmetic dentist, Dr. Evola at your next appointment about other solutions for bad breath. He may suggest a fresh breath treatment program like BreathRX.
