Teeth Crown FAQs

in Buffalo, Amherst, Lancaster and Orchard Park, NY

What is a porcelain crown?

A porcelain crown is a dental crown, or cap, used to cover a tooth that has a healthy root but is no longer structurally sound above the gum line. Teeth crowns completely cover the visible surface of the tooth.

What type of crown is right for me?

During your consultation with Dr. Evola, you and he will discuss your needs and the different treatment options. Following are some general guidelines for when certain types of crowns are used.

All-porcelain crowns - If the tooth that needs a crown is in the front of your mouth, a porcelain crown would look the best because it will match the color of the rest of your teeth. No one would even know you had a crown. Some have a porcelain lining which gives the support of a metal lining without the eventual appearance of that black line which porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns have after a few years.

Gold crowns - If you need a crown on one of your back teeth or molars and cost is a consideration, then a gold crown may be the best choice. Gold is very strong and durable, especially on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, and costs less than the other types of crowns. And while gold will not match your natural teeth in color, when used on back teeth it is less visible than if it were on a front tooth.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns - If the crown is for a back tooth and cost is not a consideration, porcelain fused to metal is a good choice, as it's very strong, makes a good chewing surface and will match your other teeth in color. After some years however, a black line will appear at the gumline, which is the metal lining showing as your gums slowly shrink with age.

How much do crowns cost?

The price of a teeth crown varies depending on the material used and the amount of time it takes to place the crown. On average, crowns cost between $600 and $1300 each. Porcelain crowns are more expensive because they are more difficult to place and require more of Dr. Evola's time.

Insurance will typically cover some, but not all, of the cost of a crown. We'll be happy to evaluate your insurance coverage and let you know what portion will be covered. If you don't have much coverage for crowns or don't have dental insurance, ask us about third party financing companies. We work with a couple that specialize in dental financing and have competitive interest rates.
