Periodontal Treatment

in Buffalo, Amherst, Lancaster and Orchard Park, NY

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth and is most often caused by plaque.

At Forestream Dental Group, Dr. Evola and his Buffalo, New York staff offer thorough, conservative periodontal management programs. Although some people may require surgery to correct problem gums, we always consider the less invasive alternatives first.

At the beginning stages of gum disease, the gums may become red and swollen and have a tendency to bleed. In the more advanced stages, the gums and bone supporting the teeth may suffer serious damage and even cause major tooth loss.

Soft-tissue Laser Treatment

The soft-tissue laser removes the diseased or inflamed tissue, vaporizes bacterial toxins, and weakens sub-gingival calculus (tartar) so that it can be easily removed. The extreme precision of the laser and vaporization action allows removal of only the diseased tissue and bacteria. Healthy tissue is left behind to regenerate itself. It also provides simultaneous coagulation (clotting) of the blood to reduce bleeding, and diminishes sensations of pain. This provides for a faster recovery and promotes better healing.

Laser treatment is especially suited for gum disease because the small size and flexibility of the fiber optic delivery system provides for easy access. Laser treatment also results in less bleeding, less post-operative pain and discomfort, and less trauma. The use of local anesthetic is usually not required.

If you notice any of the following signs of periodontal disease, make an appointment with Dr. Evola right away:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Pus between the teeth and gums when the gums are pressed
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Any changes in the fit of partial dentures

At Forestream Dental Group, we offer dental care for your whole family. From general check-ups to pediatric dental care, cosmetic dentistry to periodontal treatment, if you have a dental problem, we can solve it.
