Dental Veneers Questions

in Buffalo, Amherst, Lancaster and Orchard Park, New York

What are porcelain veneers?

Porcelain - or ceramic - veneers are thin shells of ceramic material that are permanently bonded to the front surface of your teeth. The tooth or teeth are slightly shaved down by the same thickness that the veneers will be so that the veneers don't feel too thick. Each dental veneer is custom-made and color-matched to blend in with your surrounding teeth.

When are porcelain veneers used?

Porcelain veneers are used on either the top or bottom teeth (or both) to cover many minor dental problems like:

  • Chipped and/or broken teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Crooked or unevenly worn teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Stains or spots
  • Discolored fillings

What are some of the benefits of porcelain veneers?

Instant gratification (almost): Porcelain veneers are a relatively quick way to create a dramatically different and beautiful smile. Because they cover your existing teeth, they can cover small defects like misalignment, crookedness and stains, without extensive and time-consuming orthodontic correction.

Stain-resistant: Porcelain is highly resistant to staining. With proper oral care and regular dental check ups, your veneers will stay beautiful and white for many years to come, even if you drink coffee, tea or wine on a regular basis. They are also resistant to nicotine staining.

Durable: Before being placed over your teeth, porcelain ceramic veneers are very thin and easy to break. But once placed correctly and cemented to the front surface of your teeth, they are as strong and as durable as your natural teeth, and in fact, are now part of those teeth.

How will porcelain veneers look?

When done correctly, porcelain veneers look virtually identical to real teeth. The porcelain has slight variations in color just as regular teeth do, and that same pearly shine. Dr. Evola may recommend that you have your natural teeth whitened before creating the veneers so that he can match the dental veneers to your newly brightened smile.

How long will porcelain veneers last?

With proper care, dental veneers can last 10-15 years or more. Porcelain veneers are just as durable as natural teeth but like natural teeth; they can be damaged. Actions that will break a real tooth can break a porcelain tooth, too. Be careful biting down on really hard objects or using your teeth as a bottle opener!

If you've dreamed of a beautiful smile and time is of the essence, porcelain veneers may just be the right solution for you.
