Are Dental Crowns Permanent?

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are a great, solution for restoring a fractured or weak tooth. Whenever tooth decay cannot be treated by a filling, a dental crown is the next the best option. Made of porcelain, gold, or other metals, dental crowns not only restore the function of your teeth but also leave you with an even smile.

Like many dental restorations, dental crowns can last for a lifetime, but much of that depends on how well you take care of your smile. During your time in our care, we will help you understand how to keep your crowns strong and beautiful for years and years to come.

At Forestream Dental, Dr. Larry Evola can help create a custom dental crown that helps strengthen your damaged tooth. Call us today at 716-656-8686 to schedule a complimentary consultation.

What Can Dental Crowns Correct?

Dental crowns are for teeth that are fractured, decayed, uneven, or severely discolored. Generally, dental crowns can be used to:

  • Protect weak, cracked teeth
  • Cover misshapen or discolored teeth
  • Protect teeth following a root canal
  • Attach a dental bridge
  • Replace lost teeth

Depending on the condition of your tooth, the crown can either be attached to your natural root or on an artificial root implanted in the gums. Dr. Evola will determine what type of implant is best based on the condition of your tooth.

Creating a Permanent Dental Crown

At Forestream Dental, we have a simple process for creating permanent dental crowns. During your first visit, Dr. Evola will repair the tooth in question, take a molded impression of it, and send the mold to a dental lab where the crown is custom made. While you wait for your permanent crown, you can have a temporary crown to cover the tooth.

After two weeks, you can return to the office to have your dental crown placed. Dr. Evola will fit the crown to your tooth with some fine tuning. As he tests your bite, he will make micro adjustments to the shape until it is comfortable. Finally, he will use dental cement, making your new dental crown permanent. Your new tooth will be structurally sound and have a beautiful, natural appearance.
