While it’s difficult—if not impossible—to avoid indulging in some extra sweets this time of year, it’s also important to consider your oral health; this doesn’t mean avoiding cookies, chocolates and candy canes, but it does mean remember to follow a good daily dental hygiene routine.

During the holiday season, when traveling or bouncing to and fro between friends and family, it can be easy to forget your oral health. If you’re planning to travel, make sure you remember to pack the dental hygiene essentials: soft-bristled toothbrushes for you and your family members, fluoride toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association (ADA), dental floss and, if you desire, mouthwash.
Make sure you and your children brush your teeth at least twice every day followed by flossing at least once a day. Brushing and flossing are especially important after a meal or the consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
After brushing and flossing, you should rinse your mouth thoroughly with water; you may also wish to rinse with an antibacterial, anticavity mouthwash to flush additional lingering food particles and to freshen your breath.
If you’re a parent, it’s critical to ensure that children continue to engage in good dental hygiene over the holiday break. Kids are obviously attracted to the very foods and drinks that can be most harmful to their oral health, and that are so abundant this time of year.
